South Korean new president Moon once promised he would “discard the agreement” in his campaign. Later, he retracted his previous statement saying he would “renegotiate the agreement”.
The issue was supposed be settled “finally and irreversibly” in the agreement.
The recent poll showed(in Japanese) that 76.4% of Japanese think the new South Korean Moon administration might not comply with the agreement. And 81.9% of Japanese support Japanese Abe administration’s stance of not to reopen the deal.
Most Japanese knew South Korea won’t comply as Japanese learned from the history. And most Japanese are sick and tired of South Korean harassment and false accusations and exaggerated claims against Japan. Japanese patience is running out and frustration is building up very quietly.
Moon will probably do something similar to the previous administrations have done in the past.
“I would not be surprised if Moon keeps this deal in place for now and only cancels it when it is politically expedient for him. For example if some scandal happens during his Presidency he can divert attention by cancelling this deal. It is basically just like the ROK politicians who play the Dokdo card to divert attention during a controversy.”(1)
In another wards, South Korea won’t return the money, won’t remove the statue, and will keep harassing Japan anytime, anywhere they want. And, they will shamelessly ask Japan for economical cooperation such as currency swap again.
Since I started this blog 10 years ago, I’ve written a few entries on Comfort Women issue. And it seems nothing has ever changed in regard to Japan-South Korea relations.
A good sign is that some of the US officials begin to realize there is some thing very wrong with South Korean claims. And the United States worked hard and played an important role for the agreement this time, but will their effort pay off?
It’s all in the hands of South Korean public. They have to face their own sins. They have to overcome their own insecurity/inferior complex toward Japan. South Korean government have the responsibility to persuade its own nationals.
There are still some people who accuse Japan or spread the word “sex slave”. But, those are hypocritical people who just want to be in the moral high ground.
The reason why armies allowed to set up brothels was to prevent soldier from raping or abusing women in war zones. Their intention was to protect women… Everyone, at the time, knew Comfort women means professional prostitutes. Comfort Women(prostitutes) and Sex slaves(rape victims) are two completely different things. It is even an insults to professional prostitutes. It is very regretful that some disobeying soldiers committed individual crimes during the war and it is Japan’s fault for Japan authority could not prevent them from happening. But those were punished long ago and Japan compensated to the victims.
Besides, the UN soldier used it in Korea, the US soldier used in Japan, South Korean soldier used it in Korea and Vietnam… It was wrong, but that is not something only Japan should be accused of.
None of the country except Japan apologized and made up.
We should not allow a world where those who forgive (eg Vietnam) gets less, while those who keeps hatred and irrationally arrogantly asks compensation again and again gets more.
“the road to hell is paved with good intentions”
There are thousands of Japanese women who were raped by Russians and Americans during the war and after the war. But they don’t speak up because Japan started the war and lost. But still, that was wrong. Now, the new Philippine’s president are, as if he learned from Koreans, accusing the US for the atrocity the US committed in Philippine during the US colonial period. Soon, Vietnam will get angry with South Korea for the war time atrocity of Koreans. Every one is getting angry at each other. Is this what you want? Just like Mr. Glassman said, “It’s killing us all”
